The HP Mini is one of the top five selling netbook computers on Amazon
as of late 2009. As with most netbooks, the HP Mini offers exceptional
Internet performance in a tiny package. Running Linux from the HP Mini
and other netbooks is become increasingly popular due the flexibility
and ease of use that many Linux distributions offer. Moreover, some
Linux distributions are designed specifically to operate on netbooks and
make far better use of the limited computing power than Windows.
Booting Linux from a pendrive on your HP Mini is a fast and easy way to
test out Linux and can allow you to run the system without making
permanent changes to your computer.
1. Download and install the UNetbootin application to create a bootable Linux thumb drive (see "Resources").
2. Launch UNetbootin.
3. Select your preferred Linux distribution from the drop-down menu or if
you have already downloaded a Linux distribution ISO file, specify it in
the "Diskimage" text box.
4. Click "OK" to format your thumb drive and install Linux. This will wipe
all information from the thumb drive and format it to boot Linux.
5. Click "Quit" when the installation process is complete.
6. Unmount your thumb drive by right-clicking on the devices icon in your
notification area and selecting "Stop" for the USB drive. Leave the USB
drive plugged into your HP Mini, however.
7. Restart your computer.
8. Enter your HP Mini Boot Menu from the splash screen by pressing F9.
9. Select USB thumb drive to boot Linux from the pendrive.
